Editorial Reviews

Book Description
Discover the relationship between your mouth and the rest of your body.

Whole Body Dentistry will teach you about the impact of a myriad of dental procedures and problems that may affect your health. From silver (mercury) fillings, root canals, cavitations, periodontal disease, headaches, facial pain, crowns and bridges, fluoride, etc. to the powerful new tools that a Whole Body Dentist can utilize to diagnose or treat these problems - tools that include Neural Therapy, homeopathy, Electro-Acupuncture (EAV), material compatibility testing, nutrition, etc. - are all explored in this easy to read book, along with actual patient "Dental Detective Stories" to illustrate the topics you will be learning about. In addition, "From the Patients" sections, allows you to read the results patients have attained in their own words.

The information gained from this book will enable you to participate in your own treatment decisions.

From the Publisher
Whole-Body Dentistry is an attractive and well-executed lay-person's guide to sensible dental decision-making. Written in a refreshingly open, simple and accessible first person style, the author's passion, dedication and vast clinical experience is abundantly clear.Whole-Body Dentistry is logically and compellingly organized starting with a personal account of Dr. Breiner's journey from an advocate of the "party line" offered by conventional dentistry to an advocate of wellness through data-based (not politically correct) choices. Believing that "if you wish to understand the body and healing, you must be willing to explore and learn from new ideas and from your patient's responses", this book serves another function as well. It documents the admirable course which every healing professional should take from predigested teaching to courageous exploration which follows wherever the data leads.

Our culture is currently in the midst of a great paradigm evolution. Scientism (rigidly adhering to dogma) battles science (which dares question all previous truths fearlessly). This is beautifully exemplified by the tension between "conventional" and "alternative" medicines. Practitioners like Dr. Breiner, by following their patient's clinical realities in integrity, despite personal cost, light the path to the new options for excellence.

But Whole-Body Dentistry does more: by offering simple, clear and concise information it informs and opens possibilities for patients who wish to become active and knowledgeable participants in their health care. Abundant clinical examples illustrate the points of each chapter nicely.

This is a book free of bombast or apology which eloquently provides an essential guide to new concepts and better choices. Written for non-professional audiences, the quality of the information is high enough to provide useful orientation and direction for professionals as well.

This patient education book belongs on the shelves of professionals and in the hands of the public. I recommend it highly.

From the Back Cover
"An important book for everyone who is interested in participating in their own health." Bernie Siegel, M.D., Author of Love, Medicine and Miracles and Prescriptions for Living

"Mark Breiner's new book, Whole Body Dentistry, is the cutting edge of telling the truth about the options you have when you go to a dental office." Gary Null, Ph.D Public Health Scientist Author, Get Healthy Now!

"Your total, physical health does depend on your dental health. Dr. Breiner shows you how and why - and gives you fascinating stories to prove it." Jerome Mittelman, D.D.S. Editor, The Holistic Dental Digest

"I would recommend Dr. Mark Breiner unconditionally just on the basis of my 25+ years as one of his dental patients. AND now he has written a surprisingly interesting, highly informative, easy- to-read book. WHOLE BODY DENTISTRY is easy enough for newcomers to digest yet it contains sufficient information to entice even advanced health practitioners. I was intrigued by how by how much I was learning as I read it." Barbara Hoberman Levine, Author of Your Body Believes Every Word You Say: The Language of the Body/Mind Connection

"In a powerful call-to-arms, Mark Breiner challenges the Medical and Dental professions to recognize that the teeth are vital living structures that impact the health of the entire body, so that the old song should include "the tooth bone connected to the heart bone" as well as innumerable other structures. His expos of the risks to the patient, the dentist and the chair side assistant from exposure to mercury is clear and well-documented, as are the dangers of fluoride. The sections on Root Canals and Cavitations (NICO's) are mind-boggling! Everyone should read this book!" Warren M. Levin, M.D.

About the Author
Dr. Mark A. Breiner is a graduate of the Temple University School of Dentistry and has been a practicing dentist since 1971. He was among the first proponents in Connecticut in the 1970's of dental treatment for TMJ sufferers. As his TMJ patients found relief from their suffering, other seemingly unrelated complaints disappeared. This led Dr. Breiner to realize that dentistry viewed as part of the "whole person", was a missing link that needed to be explored.

Dr. Breiner is a Fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry and a Fellow of the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology.

He has lectured throughout the country to both lay and professional audiences on Rehabilitative Dentistry, electro-dermal screening, homeopathy, and biological dentistry.

Dr. Breiner has been mercury free for over twenty years. He is currently in private practice in Orange, CT.

This year millions of Americans and their children will needlessly suffer a broad range of preventable illnesses. Less serious conditions like excessive fatigue and headaches may go unnoticed or will be incorrectly attributed to aging or stress. Thousands of individuals will develop more serious symptoms like arthritis, colitis, Alzheimer's, heart disease, infections, hypertension, thyroid imbalances, migraines, kidney damage, and even neurological problems. These people will become ill for no apparent reason.

But more often than not, there is a reason for these illnesses: their mouth. The renowned German physician, Dr. Reinhard Voll, based on more than forty years of research and observation, estimated that nearly 80% of all illness is related entirely or partially to problems in the mouth. This important statistic would surprise almost all health care practitioners; when I first heard it, it seemed incredible. In fact, both physicians and dentists have been trained to overlook almost entirely the fact that attached to every tooth is a person!

Conventional dentistry takes an extremely limited and mechanistic view of its practice, rarely considering the impact of dental work beyond the frame of the jaw. And there is a disconcerting lack of training on the systemic effects that dental procedures can have on overall body functioning. Dentists have been taught to make treatment decisions without recognizing their impact and with little appreciation of the relationship of the mouth to the rest of the body.

Since most dentists have not been trained to look at the entire person as a whole functioning system, they do not recognize the interrelationship of dental procedures and general health. Traditional dentistry has yet to understand how essential the whole-body approach to treatment is to the patient's well-being.

As a result, traditional dental practices can often cause physical illness and trauma, and can actually do more harm than good. The truth is that every dental procedure is an invasion of the human system and may generate an adverse response somewhere in the body. The milder symptoms are often confused with what we've been led to believe are the normal side effects of stress-filled lives, or the natural aging process.

Seemingly unrelated physical illnesses can be caused by dental problems like non-vital teeth, decay, or impacted wisdom teeth, because of their effect on the body's energetic meridians. In fact, some of the things that we have been told to consider natural or normal may cause completely unnecessary suffering.

That may explain why a new breed of dental practitioner is emerging. These dentists are offering important alternative solutions to traditional dental practices. I like to call this practice "Whole-Body Dentistry."

While, understanding the importance of being a highly skilled and technically proficient practitioner, Whole-Body Dentistry goes beyond this point and takes a broad, holistic view of the dental profession. This all encompassing philosophy recognizes that any work done in the mouth effects the entire human body - often with surprisingly profound results, either positive or negative. By being aware of these relationships, we strive to minimize the invasive quality of these procedures.

Whole-Body Dentistry also interprets information differently. Traditional dentistry has taught us to misread many of the body's cues, because it is still trapped in "old thinking" about the human body. But quantum physics and leading-edge medical theory now indicate that the human system has potential far beyond the prevailing medical model's overly simplistic interpretations.

Consider for a moment that the human body is entirely comprised of billions of tiny particles of energy. Within this energetic system, there are pathways called meridians. Every organ and every part of your body is directly linked to a specific tooth or area of the mouth via these meridians, or energy highways. This connection is so strong that a Whole-Body Dentist can often accurately "guess" your dental history simply by reviewing your physical symptoms.

For example, a patient came to me with chronic sinus problems which seemed to have no cause or cure. Without even examining him, I immediately asked if he had any root canal work performed on his upper first molar, which relates to the maxillary sinuses. He was amazed that I "guessed" correctly and further conversation uncovered that his sinus problems had indeed begun after the root canal. The offending tooth was removed and within a week his sinusitis completely disappeared.

It can often be that simple. A Whole-Body Dentist is like a detective, sorting through a series of clues and signals and putting the information together in a different way to discover the real source of problems. Often extracting a misaligned or offending tooth will alleviate a whole host of seemingly unrelated physical symptoms in a matter of days. Some problems will actually correct in the chair. I have had patients whose eyesight improved while they were still in the dental chair. You cannot underestimate the impact of your teeth and mouth on your entire body's health.

I have read a very large number of books on alternative healthcare over the last 5 years and I consider this book on wholistic dentistry to be one of the best. It covers virtually ever aspect of the subject in an easy to read, interesting manner with a positive and constructive attitude. Read this book, it might change your life forever.

Whole-Body Dentistry: Discover The Missing Piece To Better Health by dental surgeon Mark A. Briener provides a unique education specifically written for the non-specialist general reader into how dental health affects the health of one's whole body, and ranges from the option of alternative treatments to avoid unpleasant side effects from root canals or amalgam fillings, to how to guard against the degradation of periodontal disease, to speculations on the future of dentistry. Whole-Body Dentistry is a very highly recommended and accessible instructional reference for health-conscious minded individuals looking to take the best care of all parts of their body. It should also be compulsory reading for all students of dentistry.

5 out of 5 stars Great review of non-conventional dentistry and its solutions, August 12, 2002

Top 1000 Reviewer Reviewer: John Dunbar from Sugar Land, TX USA

Overall this is a great book on how you should plan your dental care, and how conventional dentistry could be a danger to your health. The author lists many non-conventional treatments and how they can help you in caring for your teeth.

There are many topics covered by this book besides the debate regarding mercury ("amalgam" fillings).

I saw that one reviewer here disliked the use of "EAV" (Electro-dermal Screening). I would like to provide a more detailed look at this technology. I have not seen EAV used in the dental practice, but have friends who have tried it, and I have personally seen it used (several times) to detect hidden medical problems in a non-dental area. I have had done to myself (non-dental).

Here's my take on this situation: 1) a good dentist can clearly see the major problems in your mouth and you really don't need the EAV screening in most standard cases, 2) it's value comes when the dentist can't see things visually, or doesn't see them with x-rays, 3) it must be used by a skilled practioner and this means they should know accu-puncture as well as conventional medical diagnostic techniques (being a conventional MD is a real plus), 4) the big criticism on EAV should be that it can tell WHERE the problem is, but not WHAT the problem is.

Overall, its a device for finding things... in the hands of a skilled practioner. Unfortunately, many dentists who want to go non-conventional may think that simply buying and using this equipment will make them a better dentist, or let them charge more. The problem is not the tool, but in its use, and its requirement for a skiled practioner.

Back to this book review, I think the author does a great job of presenting many different concepts of holistic dental care. I have heavily underlined this book and used its sources listed in the back.

5 out of 5 stars A Book You Won't Be Able to Put Down!, April 18, 2002

Reviewer: Sue Ward from Los Angeles, CA

This was the second of two books about the effect of toxic dental work on a person's overall health. Thank you Dr. Breiner for getting the word out. If you have silver fillings and/or root canals in your mouth - - and if you have ANY health issues, this is a MUST READ! It is very well written and thoroughly researched. Hopfully all dentists of the future will care enough about their patients' health to pursue continuing education if the field of holistic dentistry. THANK GOD I had my amagams removed (just after reading this and another great book). Everyone should read this book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
