Using Peridex® mouthwash to treat gum disease

Peridex® is a prescription mouthwash that is prescribed by dentists and periodontists in the treatment of gum disease. It is very effective at killing bacteria in your mouth because it adheres to the tissues in your mouth and continues to kill bacteria for hours. It is the most effective general anti-bacterial mouthwash.

It is often used in conjunction with other gum disease treatments. For example, if you need a deep cleaning or gum surgery, you may be given a prescription of Peridex® to take for the duration of the treatment and for right afterward, in order to keep gum inflammation under control during this time.

Peridex® has been shown to be effective in treating gingivitis, but it has never been shown to have any effect on the more serious gum disease, periodontitis, in which the supporting structures of the teeth are affected.

Peridex® is often used by restorative dentists to help control gingival inflammation between appointments. The reason is that if your gums are inflamed and tend to bleed, any bonding procedures can become contaminated.

An important side effect of Peridex® is that your teeth tend to develop a brown stain while you are using it. Supersmile® toothpaste has been shown to prevent this brown stain.
