All about tooth sealants

When bonding technology for teeth was developed in the 1970's dentists gained the ability to seal teeth.

How do sealants work

Sealants bond to the tooth in the grooves of the chewing surface. They thus eliminate the worst trap in our mouth for decay-causing bacteria.

When should teeth be sealed

When permanent molars erupt, that is the best time to have them sealed.

Once teeth have been in your mouth for a while, there is a reasonable chance that there is already some decay in the tooth. There is disagreement among dentists as to whether teeth with a little bit of decay should be sealed or not. Studies have shows that the decay under a sealant becomes mostly dormant. However, if the decay is large enough, it could grow.
