The use of mercury in dentistry is highly suspect with
some people. The books below, which are accepted with passionate devotion by
some of these people, will give everyone an insight into why they feel as they
do. We found no books written dedicated to advocating the other side of these
issues. Dr. Gordon Christensen has a Consumer Guide
to Dentistry that addresses choices of filling materials and presents the
pros and cons of filling choices. Also see our page on professional cosmetic dentistry books.
Note from America's Dental Bookstore - We feel a word
of caution is necessary in this section. The literature on the amalgam
controversy is heavily loaded with the type of book you see here - where a heavy
burden of suspicion is placed on the whole dental profession. There is a certain
personality type to whom this type of writing appeals. A writer, by taking a
stance "against the establishment," can write a piece that is very appealing to
these people, and good science is not required, only anecdotal case studies and
innuendo. In so doing, patients are worked up into not accepting dental work
recommended by perfectly competent and ethical dental professionals. There is a
strong element of truth in what these writers are saying: the dental profession
has taken a defensive posture with regard to amalgam that in some cases just
ignores the controversy and ignores the rights of patients to choose more
modern, amalgam-free dentistry. But the extreme suspicion of the profession
adopted by the texts below is not warranted, in our humble opinion.
Unfortunately, there is little written of a more moderate nature. (The book: Mercury Free, below does seem to take a more moderate approach, though we
haven't read it.) For additional information about the amalgam
controversy, there is a web site that has excellent information about it at www.mynewsmile.com/whitefillings.htm.
Amalgam Illness, Diagnosis and Treatment : What You

Book Description Amalgam Illness: Diagnosis and Treatment starts with a detailed explanation
of why to consider amalgam illness to be something that some people
must have by comparing the well known statistics for how much
mercury people absorb from their fillings to the well known
statistics of how sensitive different members of a population are to
a given toxin. This is for people who really don't know if they
believe in amalgam illness or not (the other material available is
rather sensational and I can't blame anyone reading it for having
questions) before going any further.
It's All in Your Head: The Link Between Mercury
Amalgams and Illness by Dr. Hal A. Huggins
ISBN: 0895295504 Publisher: Avery Penguin Putnam, Sept. 1993
$11.16 194 pages Paperback
Dentist Huggins has led the fight to
alert the public and health professionals to the dangers of using
mercury in the amalgams used to fill teeth. Here he describes his
battle with the American Dental Association and the results of his
research studies. After explaining mercury toxicity, he describes
such conditions as neurological and immunological diseases that can
result from this toxicity. His discussion also includes the
diagnosis of mercury toxicity and the pros and cons of having
mercury amalgam fillings removed. He indicates that there are often
no definitive answers in the diagnostic process and that the final
proof of mercury toxicity is whether the patient feels better when
mercury fillings are removed. A useful if very detailed look at a
continuing health controversy. Karen Graves

Whole-Body Dentistry: Discover The Missing Piece To
Better Health by Mark A. Breiner DDS, Robert C. Atkins MD
ISBB: 0967844304 Publisher: Quantum Health Press, July 1999
$13.57 240 pages Paperback
From the
Publisher
Whole-Body Dentistry is an attractive and
well-executed lay-person's guide to sensible dental decision-making.
Written in a refreshingly open, simple and accessible first person
style, the author's passion, dedication and vast clinical experience
is abundantly clear. Whole-Body Dentistry is logically and
compellingly organized starting with a personal account of Dr.
Breiner's journey from an advocate of the "party line" offered by
conventional dentistry to an advocate of wellness through data-based
(not politically correct) choices. Believing that "if you wish to
understand the body and healing, you must be willing to explore and
learn from new ideas and from your patient's responses", this book
serves another function as well. It documents the admirable course
which every healing professional should take from predigested
teaching to courageous exploration which follows wherever the data
leads.
