Dental History
The Excruciating History of Dentistry: Toothsome Tales & Oral Oddities from Babylon to Braces
by James Wynbrandt
ISBN: 0312263198  Publisher: Griffin Trade Paperback, Aug. 2000
$12.23   248 pages Paperback

Book Description:
For those on both sides of the dreaded dentist's chair, James Wynbrandt has written a witty, colorful, and richly informative history of the art and science of dentistry. To all of those dental patients whose whine rises in tandem with that of the drill, take note: You would do well to stifle your terror and instead offer thanks to Apollonia, the patron saint of toothache sufferers, that you face only fleeting discomfort rather than the disfiguring distress, or slow agonizing death oft meted out by dental-care providers of the past. The transition from yesterday's ignorance, misapprehension, and superstition to the enlightened and nerve-deadened protocols of today has been a long, slow, and very painful process.

From Book News, Inc.
Dentist to the pope, Eustachius (1520-74) left several small treatises at his death, among them this Libellus de Dentibus, devoted to the anatomy of the teeth and to concepts of their development and function. His major works were unknown for a century until a later pope discovered them, and they were published in Amsterdam in 1714. Chernin (endodontics, Tufts U. and Harvard U.) and Shklar (oral pathology, Harvard U.) are both interested in the history of their field, and here present an English translation facing facsimiles of the original Latin edition.Book News, Inc.®, Portland, OR

$32.99   249 pages Paperback
Free Shipping!

Book Description
Medicine and Society in Early Modern Europe, in the highly successful series of New Approaches, offers undergraduate students a concise introduction to a subject rich in historical excitement and interest. Bringing together the best and most innovative recent research, Mary Lindemann examines medicine from a social and cultural perspective, rather than a narrowly scientific one. Drawing on medical anthropology, sociology and ethics as well as cultural and social history, she focuses on the experience of illness and on patients and folk healers as much as on the rise of medical science, doctors and hospitals. Mary Lindemann is a distinguished scholar in the history of medicine and writes with exceptional clarity on this fascinating subject; her book will be essential reading for all students of the history of medicine, and provide invaluable context for historians of early modern Europe in general.

Toothworms and Spider Juice Toothworms and Spider Juice : An Illustrated History of Dentistry

$52.33 (Prices may vary)
Out of Print. Click the Amazon "buy" link to buy used copies of this text.

Editorial Reviews
From Booklist
Ichord has written an entertaining history of dentistry that is full of gruesome treatments, terrifying instruments, peculiar cures, and superstitions. The book's 12 chapters are devoted to such varied topics as the belief in the evil toothworm, early dentist-barbers and tooth-drawers, dental quackery, and tooth decoration. Because the chapter titles are exotic rather than descriptive, and the organization is a sometimes confusing hodgepodge of topics and historical periods, the book is better suited for browsing than as a research tool. With wise use of the index, however, report writers will find brief but helpful information to bolster reports and fill in studies of ancient cultures in the Americas, Europe, and Asia. Source notes, glossary, bibliography. Randy Meyer
